My name is Joseph Richard Tharp. I was born in Milan Indiana, which may not mean much unless you have seen the movie “Hoosiers” or are from Indiana. The “Milan Miracle of 1954″ was the inspiration for the movie. On a true March Madness night in Butler Field house, the Indians of tiny Milan High School (enrollment 162 with only 75 boys) defeated the mighty Muncie Central Bearcats (enrollment 1,662), to win the state championship.
I grew up in southeast Indiana on the Ohio border, and near Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1977 after high school I joined the U.S. Navy where I spent the next twenty years on active duty and another 10 in auxiliary and reserve units. Literally been there done that and sometimes got a t-shirt. I lived in San Diego, Memphis, and Japan while I was in the Navy. After the Navy I moved just across the border from Indiana where I grew up to Ohio, now I live in Arkansas.
